The goal
Help your athlete build confidence and accountability without adding extra pressure at home.
Three parent rules
1) Praise process before outcomes
Instead of:
- "Did you win?"
Use:
- "What did you execute well today?"
- "Where did you show effort and discipline?"
2) Keep post-game debrief short
Use a 3-question format:
- What went well?
- What can improve?
- What is the next action?
Then move on.
3) Separate identity from performance
Athletes need to know:
- one game does not define them,
- one mistake does not define them.
That safety builds long-term confidence.
A weekly parent check-in
Once per week ask:
- "How can I support your goals this week?"
Let the athlete answer first.
For teams and organizations
Parent alignment sessions help reduce sideline stress and improve communication between players, coaches, and families.
